My Recommended Reads for March
A Promised Land by Barak Obama
Barak. The man can write a lot of words. I listened to this book in audiobook format because I enjoy non-fiction audio read by the author. There were many interesting parts and stories from his days before the Presidency through his first term. I have to say, some accounts felt like I was reliving the event in real-time, and I’m not sure I would have stuck with it if I was reading a hard copy. I enjoyed hearing about life in the White House and think it was a good book overall.
King and the Dragonflies by Kacen Callender
This young adult novel had all the feels. Kingston is twelve years old when his brother Khalid unexpectedly passed away. King has to figure out how to navigate life without his brother. To add to that, his best friend Sandy and him had a falling out, but now Sandy has gone missing. King knows where he is and he’s not going to tell. King and Sandy evolve as characters and support one another as King wonders if he may be gay, like Sandy.
Sadie by Courtney Summers
If you like mystery and podcasts, this book is for you! I listened to this as an audiobook and truly enjoyed it. I don’t think it would have had the same effect on paper. This story is about a girl named Sadie who goes missing after her sister’s found dead. The chapters vary from Sadie telling her story, to a reporter’s podcast telling about the search to find her and solve what happened to this family. All of the characters are narrated by a different person, which I truly enjoyed.
That Sounds Fun: The Joys of Being an Amateur, the Power of Falling in Love, and Why You Need a Hobby by Annie F. Downs
If you don’t read or follow Annie F. Downs, you are missing out. I want to be her friend in real life. This book had me laughing and crying and just wanting to sit on her porch and be her BFF. Annie’s book talks about how to do fun things in life and be vulnerable, and say yes and no’s to things life hands us. I pre-ordered this book and was able to listen to the audiobook, which I loved because Annie is talking right to me. I can’t wait to re-read this book.
