Let us Toast to the Parents of Preschoolers! We did it!

This age, four years old, is the exact place I thought I would never see.

For so long, I couldn’t see past the age of two, and most days, I was so deep into the thick of the weeds I was holding my breath just to make it until bedtime. As a mom of twins, the last few years have been full of uncertainty and chaos. Only those who have been inside twinland can understand the intensity of those early days. We didn’t have enough time, enough hands, or enough eyes to ensure anything other than survival. But we did it…we survived and our boys our thriving as little humans. So let us toast!

I’d like to raise my caffeinated beverage and toast to the parents of preschoolers. We did it!

  • Let’s congratulate ourselves on making it through the isolation and an invisibility of the infant months.
  • Let’s pat ourselves on the back weening them from pacifiers, transitioning them into big kid beds, and conquering all the woes of potty training.
  • Let us toast to trading in the burden of a diaper bag for the luxury of throwing a few applesauce pouches in our purses and an extra pair of underwear in the glove compartment.
  • Let’s celebrate our little human’s immune systems who have been tried and tried again and we got through cold and flu season like champs this year.

Let us toast to the independent little adults living in our house. Cheers to the magic years!

  • Let’s tip our hats to kids putting on their own shoes and coats.
  • Let’s acknowledge that they are beginning to listen more and defy less.
  • Let us toast this time when our child’s imagination and personality shines.

Find your parenting partner and together raise those glasses once more.

  • Here’s to us navigating through the murkiness of the infant and toddler years with grace and humility.
  • Here’s to us embracing the creativity, ingenuity, and resourcefulness needed in parenting.
  • Here’s to the long days of parenting that we’ve overcome and those longer and harder days of parenting that are undoubtedly ahead.

Let us toast

Cheers!

Becka is an Iowa native who moved to Omaha in June 2015. She is one half of a higher education couple, a mom to identical twin boys (Avery and Elliot 2014) and two sassy wiener dogs (Nora and Knox). Becka enjoys the craziness of twins and the unpredictability of each day. Even with three degrees, most recently a doctorate in higher education, she continues to find herself googling things like “pachycephalosaurus + herbivore” or “excavator vs digger.” With two very energetic and curious preschoolers at home Becka enjoys the peacefulness of her daily commute to Lincoln where she is a coordinator in the Nebraska Business Honors Academy. Becka loves being outdoors in her garden, on the lake with her family, or sitting on the patio with a friend. Her kryptonite is diet coke, peanut m&m’s and a kid free Target trip.
